The Impact of Cash Transfers on School Enrollment: Evidence from Ecuador
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper presents evidence about the impact on school enrollment of a program in Ecuador that gives cash transfers to the 40 percent poorest families. The evaluation design consists of a randomized experiment for families around the first quintile of the poverty index and of a regression discontinuity design for families around the second quintile of this index, which is the program’s eligibility threshold. This allows us to compare results from two different credible identification methods, and to investigate whether the impact varies with families’ poverty level. Around the first quintile of the poverty index the impact is positive while it is equal to zero around the second quintile. This suggests that for the poorest families the program lifts a credit constraint while this is not the case for families close to the eligibility threshold. JEL-codes: I38, I28

Cash Transfers and Child Schooling: Evidence from a Randomized Evaluation of the Role of Conditionality
We conduct a randomized experiment in Burkina Faso to estimate the impact of alternative cash transfer delivery mechanisms on education. The two-year pilot program randomly distributed cash transfers that were either conditional (on enrollment and attendance) or unconditional. Results indicate that conditional and unconditional transfers have similar impacts increasing enrollment for children t...

The Impact of a Cash Transfer Program on Cognitive Achievement: The Bono de Desarrollo Humano of Ecuador Throughout Latin America, conditional cash transfer (CCT) programs play an important role in social policy. متن کاملAn Assessment of the Medium Term Impacts of a Honduran Conditional Cash Transfer Experiment on Education and Fertility
Conditional cash transfer (CCT) programs have been widely used in the developing world as a tool to break the poverty cycle. Short-term studies have found positive impacts of CCTs on education and health outcomes. However, little is known about longer-term outcomes of beneficiaries and any unintended consequences, namely on fertility, that there may be. This paper assesses medium-term (5-6 year...

This work estimates the impact on school enrollment of a Nicaraguan conditional cash transfer program, Red de Protección Social (RPS). RPS is one of a growing number of these programs (e.g. Progresa, Bolsa Escola, and PRAF) that pays households regular cash transfers on the condition that their children attend school and all household members visit health clinics and seminars. A household model...
متن کاملMust Conditional Cash Transfer Programs be conditioned to be effective? The impact of conditioning transfers on school enrollment in Mexico
A growing body of evidence suggests that conditional cash transfer (CCT) programs can have strong, positive effects on a range of welfare indicators for poor households in developing countries. However, there is little evidence about how important each component of these programs is towards achieving these outcomes. This paper contributes to filling this gap by explicitly testing the importance...
